Satellite-gene abundance fusion reveals global hotspots of ocean ecosystem services

The Ocean sustains planetary health through climate regulation, biodiversity, and essential ecosystem services. Plankton underpins these processes by driving primary production, sustaining food webs, and mediating carbon sequestration. Yet the spatial organization of plankton-based ecosystem services remains poorly understood. The High Seas Treaty and the 30% Ocean protection target by 2030 create an urgent need for science-based guidance for global ocean governance. Here, we aim to identify key planktonic areas associated with functional diversity, net primary productivity, and carbon export globally. We used machine learning to integrate omics-derived plankton functions and satellite observations with diversity metric and ecosystem services. Leveraging metagenomic data, we identified molecular functions strongly linked to ecosystem functioning and project their global distributions across seasons. We reveal putative hotspots of functional diversity, net primary productivity, and carbon export. Our analysis pinpoints areas where all three indicators converge synchronously, predominantly along oceanographic structures such as polar fronts and principal current systems. By relying on satellite data as core input, our approach captures the temporal variability of these hotspots, providing a global, dynamic protocol for projections of plankton-based ecosystem services. These findings establish a foundation for developing integrative conservation tools based on ecosystem functioning and inform adaptive management under climate change.

Modulating Neurotoxic Effects of Prenatal Chlorpyrifos Exposure Through Probiotic and Vitamin D Gestational Supplementation: Unexpected Effects on Neurodevelopment and Sociability

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by impairments in sociability and communication. Prenatal exposure to Chlorpyrifos has been associated with autism-like behaviors in preclinical models. Interest has grown in the gut-brain axis and the role of microbiota modulation through dietetic supplementation to reduce this ASD-like phenotype. This study examines the effects of prenatal CPF exposure in Wistar Rats and assesses the potential of gestational probiotic and vitamin D supplementation to mitigate these effects in offspring. CPF exposure significantly impaired sociability in adolescence, and supplementation did not reverse these deficits. However, in control animals, supplementation induced neurodevelopmental changes, including alterations in metabolic status, the pattern of expression of ASD-related genes, the regulation of oxytocin and vasopressin receptors, and the GABAergic system in the brain. Additionally, supplementation accelerated overall development, increased ultrasonic vocalization emission and modified the typical responses to social novelty. CPF exposure blocked most of these effects at both behavioral and molecular levels. While supplementation did not block CPF-induced impairments, CPF exposure altered the observed effects of supplementation in controls, possibly indicating shared molecular mechanisms. These findings highlight the need for further research into the safety of probiotic and vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy.

SARS-CoV-2 genomes recovered by long amplicon tiling multiplex approach using nanopore sequencing and applicable to other sequencing platforms

Genomic surveillance has become a useful tool for better understanding virus pathogenicity, origin and spread. Obtaining accurately assembled, complete viral genomes directly from clinical samples is still a challenging. Here, we describe three protocols using a unique primer set designed to recover long reads of SARS-CoV-2 directly from total RNA extracted from clinical samples. This protocol is useful, accessible and adaptable to laboratories with varying resources and access to distinct sequencing methods: Nanopore, Illumina and/or Sanger.
