Perception of Mangrove Ecosystem Conservation: A Case of Silvofishery in East Kalimantan, Indonesia
This research aims to explore farmers perceptions of mangroves, the impact of mangroves availability on shrimp aquaculture production, and the relationship between mangroves and aquaculture production among traditional shrimp aquaculture farmers in Berau. This study utilized a mixed-method approach to investigate farmers perceptions of mangroves and their contribution to aquaculture production. Quantitative data was collected through surveys targeting traditional shrimp farmers across six villages in Berau during September-October 2023, covering 619 ponds (64.01% of the total 967 ponds). The data analysis focused on mangrove availability, positioning within ponds, and intensity surrounding them, using two-way MANOVA to explore the influence of mangroves on shrimp production, preceded by t-tests and one-way ANOVA to compare production across different pond characteristics. The quantitative analysis was enriched by qualitative data, obtained through 34 semi-structured interviews utilizing purposive sampling, aimed to capture diverse perspectives on the mangrove ecosystems role in aquaculture. Our findings suggest that the integration of mangrove and shrimp aquaculture holds potential, but must address shrimp farmers concerns regarding livelihood continuity and technical challenges such as ensuring suitable mangrove species and managing stable pond conditions. By exploring the communitys views on the degradation of integrated mangrove and shrimp aquaculture and its impacts, this study develops strategies to engage shrimp farmers in mangrove restoration efforts while supporting their livelihoods.
